Due to their special structure, different location conditions prevail in the different areas of a herb snail or herb spiral, which best suit the respective requirements of the selected herbs. When creating the stone spiral, the many different types can be placed in the most suitable place.
Where should an herb snail be placed?
The ideal location for a herb snail is sunny and near the house or kitchen. The spiral consists of different zones: the upper zone is dry and lean, the middle zone is moderately nutrient-rich and the lower zone is moist and nutrient-rich.
Most herbs love the sun
Most herbs need sun, which is why the herb snail should ideally be set up in a sunny location. The bed is divided into several zones with a wide variety of substrates, from lean and dry to nutrient-rich and moist. Different conditions arise in terms of light and shadow as well as moisture. The herbs also benefit from the heat that the stones store in the sun and slowly release again. This heat storage even alleviates light night frosts.
The different zones
The upper zone of the herb spiral is fully sunny, the soil is permeable, lean and dry. The sunny to partially shaded middle zone offers a moderately nutrient-rich and dry location, while the sunny and nutrient-rich lower zone offers a moist substrate.
Tip
Since the location of the herbs should be close to the house or kitchen, the herb spiral is often included in the patio design.
