There are many reasons why transplanting buddleia might be necessary. Be it because the plant doesn't feel comfortable in its current location or simply because it has become too big. Or maybe you just want to redesign the garden, which is why the buddleia has to go now. As a rule, the shrub is easy to move and will grow back quickly with the right care.
How can I transplant my buddleia correctly?
In order to successfully transplant a buddleia, this should be done during the dormant phase - ideally between October and November. Beforehand, cut the plant back by a third, carefully lift out the root ball and reinsert it in a suitable location with compost and horn shavings.
Autumn is the best time
For successful relocation, it is best to dig up the buddleia while it is resting. During the vegetation phase, the plant could quickly resent such a measure, but in autumn - ideally in the months of October to November, when the ground is still warm - there should be nothing to stop such a plan. If this is not possible, the shrub can be transplanted in early spring, if possible before budding in March or April. However, the prerequisite for this is that the ground is already free of frost.
How to move a buddleia – step by step
Before actually moving, cut the buddleia back by about a third. This measure is important so that the balance between the upper and lower parts of the plant is maintained. Ultimately, when transplanting, some of the roots are always lost, and the remaining ones can no longer adequately supply the above-ground shoots. Pruning prevents this. It continues as follows:
- Tie the shoots together loosely with twine or something similar.
- Now cut off the root ball.
- Choose a radius that corresponds to approximately three quarters of the original growth height.
- Now lift the root ball out of the ground using a digging fork.
The adhering soil can remain on the plants, making it easier for the buddleia to grow in its new location. There, mix a generous handful of horn shavings (€52.00 on Amazon) and compost into the excavation for an optimal start.
Careful care makes growth easier
So that the buddleia grows properly, you should water it heavily after planting and provide it with plenty of water regularly in the following days. However, be careful not to cause waterlogging. When transplanting in autumn, protect the transplanted buddleia by mulching the root disc from unfavorable weather conditions, to which it will react more sensitively than usual.
Tip
You can use the cut wood and shoots to propagate the flowering bush.
