The walnut can be propagated in various ways. The easiest option is the version with cuttings. Our guide will tell you how to proceed!
How do I propagate walnut tree cuttings?
To propagate walnut tree cuttings, plant several 15 cm long shoots in nutrient-rich potting soil in a planter. Place the pot in a bright, frost-protected location and keep the soil constantly moist. After successful growth, transplant the offshoots into separate pots.
Propagate walnut cuttings – this is how it works
Compared to propagation via walnut fruits, the cutting method can be implemented more quickly. You don't need any prior knowledge or experience to successfully grow a new walnut tree.
Here are the instructions for the offshoot:
- Fill a sufficiently large plant pot (€75.00 on Amazon) with high-quality, nutrient-rich potting soil.
- Cut off several fresh shoots from the mother tree. The length of these shoots should be at least 15 centimeters. Incidentally, it's not a problem if the shoots are still green or perhaps even have slight woodiness.
- Place the cuttings in the prepared container.
- Water the soil vigorously.
- Place the planter in a bright location protected from frost.
- Keep the soil constantly moist afterwards.
- You can easily check whether the propagation is working: If new leaves appear soon, the corresponding cutting has been taken. Otherwise you are dealing with a “barren” shoot.
- As soon as the offshoots have started, give each plant its own pot.
- Place the planters with the walnut trees outdoors in summer in a sunny location. The soil should never dry out - so make sure to water your little ones regularly.
- Towards winter you should move your young trees to a frost-proof storage area. Finally, the plants are not yet sufficiently hardy. It will take at least two years until then.
More tips for propagating walnuts with cuttings
- First, always put several cuttings in a plant pot. You can never know in advance how many offshoots will actually develop roots. By planting multiple shoots, there is a higher chance that at least one of them will become something.
- Under no circumstances should you transplant your cuttings into the garden too early. After all, walnut trees are very frost-sensitive plants that can freeze very easily. This applies especially to young trees.
- Propagate a walnut tree only if you have the necessary space in the garden. Eventually, over the years, the tree will grow up to 15 meters tall (or perhaps even taller). After decades, it also takes up a lot of space in width.
