Fruit types are used as espalier fruit that can also be planted freely in the garden. However, their further growth differs significantly. Are there also differences in planting time? When do the roots of a tree chosen as a trellis come into the ground?
When should you plant espalier fruit?
Espaliered fruit in containers can be planted all year round on frost-free days. However, bare-rooted trees should be planted in the ground between October and March, also on frost-free days. This time promotes good growth.
Planting container goods
All espaliered fruit varieties are offered all year round as so-called container goods. This means that they come with a pot in which the roots are covered in soil. When planting, the entire root ball goes into the soil unchanged, where the roots can spread further.
Containerware can therefore be planted as espalier fruit all year round. It should just be a frost-free day.
Planting bare root espalier fruit
If you use bare-root trees to plant espaliered fruit, there is a restricted planting time:
- plant from October to March
- on a frost-free day
Tip
If possible, also plant container goods from October to March. This is the best time to root well. Planting in hot summers is stressful for the young tree.
