Java moss is so creatively versatile that no aquarium should be without it. The plant makes it easy for us to cultivate because it is very undemanding. So it continues to grow even under less than favorable conditions. Nevertheless, we should give it some care so that it becomes even more beautiful.
How do I care for the Java moss in the aquarium?
Java moss care in the aquarium includes a water temperature between 20 and 30 ° C, sufficient brightness or lighting, occasional fertilizing with liquid fertilizer, regular cutting and cleaning, and simple propagation by dividing and attaching the moss to a new location.
Temperature and light
In the aquarium, the Java moss is surrounded by water. Its temperature has a decisive influence on its growth. The ideal value is between 20 and 30 °C.
So that the Java moss gets enough brightness, its low growth means it is well placed in the front area of the aquarium. If its location is not sunny or at least partially shaded, it should be additionally illuminated with a lamp. The brighter the moss is, the faster it will grow and form wide carpets.
Fertilize
Java moss does not have any great demands on the water in the aquarium. That's why this plant doesn't need to maintain a specific pH value or pay attention to the hardness of the water.
Change some of the water regularly. In addition, this moss is supported in growth with occasional doses of a liquid fertilizer (€11.00 on Amazon). Otherwise, its growth may stall and its beautiful green color may suffer.
Cutting
Even without cutting, the Java moss grows nice and dense. Even so dense that suspended particles get caught in the felt made of fine twigs. That's why it is visited by small fish and shrimps, who welcome this food. But it can also be that the Java moss accumulates too much dirt over time.
- lighten regularly if necessary
- use sharp, clean scissors
- proceed carefully so that branches do not break
Tip
You can also take dirty java moss out of the basin and wash it off. Specimens that are attached can be vacuumed with a vacuum cleaner. But please don't get too close as the delicate branches could be damaged.
Propagate
Once a beautiful carpet of moss has emerged in the aquarium, it is easy to propagate. Halve the moss or separate a suitable piece. Then attach it to a new place where it can continue to develop independently.
