Java moss comes from the island of Java and other Southeast Asian countries. The assumption is that it therefore likes warm water. Is that correct? Or is this plant tougher than we give it credit for.

What temperature is ideal for Java moss?

Java moss grows best at a water temperature of 24 °C, but shows a high tolerance to temperature fluctuations. Surviving temperatures are between 15 and 30 °C, although other water qualities can also survive.

Water environment

In this country, Java moss is mostly cultivated in aquariums. Unlike in the wild and in a terrarium, it is completely surrounded by water. This element therefore has a decisive influence on itsgrowth. Since water can have different temperature values, the question arises: How warm should it be for the Java fern?

Ideal temperature

It can be observed that Java moss grows fastest and most beautifully when the water in the aquarium is around 24 °C. Of course, provided that it also receives optimal care and is well lit.

Large tolerance range

What happens to the Java moss if the water in the aquarium is colder or warmer than 24 °C? Nothing to worry us about. Java moss is surprisingly tolerant of deviations.

  • Temperature fluctuations are accepted
  • Water just shouldn't be too warm
  • Survival range is between 15 and 30 °C

Some providers even specify the temperature range as 12 to 34 °C. But you shouldn't push your luck too much. It's not about just keeping the Java moss alive. Every plant deserves good living conditions. And of course we also want to see he althy, well-growing Java moss in the aquarium.

Select temperature

Hardly any aquarium grows exclusively with Java moss. There are usually other plants involved. There are also fish, shrimp and other aquatic animals. The water temperature must satisfy all aquarium inhabitants. Since Java moss is less sensitive in this respect than many other aquatic plants, it will have to make do with “foreign” ideal values.

Other water qualities

Java moss is also an adaptable plant when it comes to water quality. The water in the aquarium can be slightly acidic or neutral, with a pH value of 5 to 8. It grows in fresh water, but also survives in brackish water.

The temperature values listed above also apply in the terrarium, although the air should also be moist.
