In the aquarium, Java moss grows under almost all conditions. But if you don't want to leave the sprouting of new branches to chance, support the bright green plant wherever you can. In this way, the optimum is made of its growth potential.
How do I promote the growth of Java moss in the aquarium?
Java moss grows slowly and reaches a height of 5-10 cm. Optimal growth conditions are 24 °C, a pH value between 5-8, plenty of light and CO2 as well as clean water and regular fertilization. Persistent growth forms dense carpets of moss.
Growth rate
After the Java moss has been tied to a suitable object in the aquarium, it needs about two weeks to get used to the new environment. Then he starts to grow. The initial focus is on the formation of adhesive roots with which Java moss attaches itself to the substrate.
Java moss is not one of the fastest growing plants in the aquarium. But it continues to grow bit by bit.
Growth Direction
The branches of this type of moss grow vertically to the side, which is why Java moss conquers the space around itself rather than height. Over time, entire moss carpets are created that can cover the pool like a lawn.
The growth is also so dense that the branches can form a felt. To ensure that the moss is not contaminated by adhering suspended particles, new growth should be thinned out with scissors if necessary (€14.00 on Amazon).
Tip
You can easily multiply Java moss by cutting off a piece of the existing moss carpet and replanting it somewhere else in the aquarium.
Growth height
Java moss is a comparatively small plant. It usually grows to just 5 to 10 cm high. More rarely, it is reported that it can grow up to 20 cm high. With such a low growth, the Java moss is well placed in the front part of the aquarium.
Ideal growing environment
The accepted temperature is between 15 and 30 °C. But this plant grows best at around 24 °C. Water hardness and pH value play a minor role. A pH value between 5-8 is considered ideal.
Java moss needs a lot of light. Its location should therefore be sunny to partially shaded. If it grows too dark, a lamp must provide it with additional light.
Care for rapid growth
Improved living conditions and good care can have a beneficial effect on the growth of Java moss.
- clean water changed weekly
- lots of CO2
- regular fertilization
