We know the plane tree primarily from southern European countries. It is planted less frequently in this country. Probably because we are not very familiar with their cultivation. Planting is relatively easy. We should only be careful when looking for a location.
How to plant a plane tree correctly?
To plant a plane tree, choose a sunny or partially shaded location with plenty of space. In spring, dig a planting hole, add compost and a drainage layer, insert young plane trees and fill with soil mixture. Then water well, tie it to a support post and water regularly.
The location must offer plenty of space
A young plane tree can cope with any place as long as it is sunny or partially shaded. However, as the tree ages, it will form a spreading crown. The invisible root system will develop even wider.
When planting, make sure that there is enough free space for future growth. Otherwise you will have to cut the crown often. Also avoid being near walls so that the roots can spread unhindered.
Tip
If you only notice afterwards that the chosen spot is not ideal, luckily an older plane tree can also be easily transplanted.
The ideal time to plant is in spring
Even if container goods can be planted all year round, a warm spring month is generally recommended for planting plane trees. The young tree has plenty of time to root well and develop resistance until winter.
Buy or multiply
If you want to plant a plane tree in your garden, you will find several species to choose from in tree nurseries. Except for the mini trees, the specimens on offer are not exactly cheap. It's worth it, if you have the opportunity, to propagate a plane tree yourself.
Planting instructions
- Dig a large planting hole about three times as deep and wide as the rootstock.
- Loosen the soil and add compost.
- Prepare a drainage layer of pebbles (11.00€ on Amazon) to increase permeability.
- Mix the excavated material with compost. You can also add pebbles to loosen it up.
- Insert the young plane tree as deep as it was in the container.
- Fill gaps with the soil mixture, pressing firmly.
- Water the plane tree well.
After planting
So that the plane tree develops well, you should do the following immediately after planting:
- tie the tree to a support post
- mulch the root disc thickly
- water regularly in the first few months
