Privet copes well with air pollution and tolerates changeable weather conditions. This makes the tree a popular hedge plant. Certain locations promote he althy growth. The planting itself turns out to be uncomplicated.
How do you plant privet correctly?
When planting privet, you should water bare-root products in advance, dig a sufficiently large planting hole and place the root ball at ground level. Additionally incorporate compost, press down the substrate, form a watering edge and water sufficiently. Keep the soil around the plant free of weeds.
Time
Privet can be planted in fall or spring. Conditions often have a lot of precipitation in October, which means that the young plants grow better. Pay more attention to regular watering after winter if spring is too dry. To prevent the root ball from drying out, you should choose an overcast day for planting, or plant the tree in the evening.
Location
The ornamental tree has no special location requirements. If the pH value is in the slightly alkaline range, it grows particularly well. The shrub prefers sunny locations and also thrives in partially shaded conditions. In a shady location there is a high risk that the plant will become bald over time. Waterlogging quickly leads to rot, which is why privet feels more comfortable in well-drained soil.
Planting
There are no special aspects you need to consider when planting privet. Bare root crops should be watered before planting. Place the tree in a bucket filled with water for two to three hours. Meanwhile, dig a planting hole whose volume is twice as large as the root ball.
How to proceed:
- Mix excavated material with manure (€29.00 on Amazon) or compost
- add some of the mixture to the pit
- Insert the root ball so that its top edge is level with the ground
- fill the remaining soil into the gap
- Press the substrate lightly
- Form a 15 to 20 centimeter high pouring rim
- Administer five to ten liters of water per plant
Tip
You should pull weeds within 50 centimeters and keep this area weed-free for the next three years. This means that the privet grows better because it doesn't have to compete for nutrients.
What do I have to pay attention to?
If the root ball is protected by a jute sack or cardboard box, we recommend planting it as soon as possible. If this is not possible due to unfavorable weather conditions, you must ensure regular watering. With potted plants, the substrate does not dry out as quickly. Remove wire mesh and pots before inserting. Jute nets or cardboard boxes later decompose in the soil.
