A mole in the garden is usually not a pretty sight. In addition, the mole is protected and may neither be killed nor caught. Active hunting and aggressive driving away of animals is also prohibited. However, gentle expulsion methods are permitted. Find out here how to persuade the mole to move using a wind turbine.
How does a wind turbine work against moles?
A wind turbine against moles helps by disturbing the mole with vibrations and noises. You can build it yourself from a metal rod and a plastic bottle. Place several wind turbines near the mole burrows to gently encourage the unwanted “lodger” to move.
The mole as a beneficial insect
Even if the mole leaves unsightly mounds in the garden, it is essentially a beneficial insect:
- Moles are master pest killers and protect your vegetable garden from annoying pests.
- Moles ensure good aeration of the soil and excellent soil quality.
- Moles are pure herbivores and would never attack your vegetables. Eaten roots are an indication of voles.
So before you get rid of your mole, you should consider whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
The working principle of the wind turbine against the mole
Mole eyesight is extremely poor. But they hear and feel all the better - a fact that you can use against him. A wind turbine makes noise, not for our ears, but definitely for the mole's ears. In principle, the wind turbine is the animal-friendly alternative to ultrasound. Nobody likes constant noise at home. Therefore, well-built and cleverly positioned wind turbines can entice the mole to move.
Build your own wind turbine against moles
Even if you can buy wind turbines against moles from specialist retailers, you can definitely save yourself the money. Simply build the wind turbine yourself! For each wind turbine you will need a metal rod (!) and a plastic bottle. Metal conducts sound better than wood or plastic and is therefore the better choice for the wind turbine against moles. Incidentally, the wind turbine also works against voles. Then proceed as follows:
- Use a pen to mark four to five “wings” approximately in the middle of the bottle. These wings should be about an index finger long and half an index finger wide. There must be about 1cm of space between each wing so that the bottle does not break.
- Using sharp scissors, cut out three sides of the wings. Leave a page.
- On this side, bend the cut out part outwards.
- Repeat the process for all other wings.
- Remove the cap from the bottle and place it upside down on the stick.
Set up the wind turbine
This method works best if you build several wind turbines and place them in different locations. What's important is that you hit the aisle. It also makes sense not to put the wind turbines in molehills so as not to deprive the animals of an opportunity to escape. Therefore, draw a straight line between two mounds and dig up the area until you hit the passage. Insert the wind turbine here and close the passage again. Repeat the process until all the pinwheels are placed.
Tip
Combine this method with other mole remedies such as garlic to increase the chance that the mole will move.
