Bamboo has been used as a building material for thousands of years, especially in the tropical regions of Asia. The bamboo tubes, which are up to 35 centimeters in diameter, are extremely hard and durable. Bamboo is also being used more and more here. How to attach the material correctly.
How to properly attach bamboo?
Bamboo can be attached with cable ties, staplers or wire for privacy screens and fences. On balconies, plastic loops or flexible wire are suitable for attaching to the railing. Pierced, woody bamboo culms can be assembled with washer head screws.
How do you attach a privacy screen made of bamboo mats?
Bamboo mats are particularly popular and can be used in a variety of ways - for example as a privacy screen attached to a fence (whether wooden or chain link) or railing. The assembly of the dense mats is uncomplicated and can be easily accomplished even by non-professionals.
All you need are cable ties (€12.00 on Amazon), a staple gun or similar materials for fastening. Galvanized wire is also very suitable. Just make sure that you secure the bamboo mat at the top and bottom. This ensures greater stability, which is important in windy conditions, for example.
How do you attach a bamboo privacy screen to the balcony?
A privacy screen on the balcony railing ensures more privacy and also ensures that there is a certain level of wind protection. Here, too, you can attach the mats to the balcony railing using plastic loops or flexible wire by threading the fastening material around the stalks at regular intervals and attaching them to the railing.
Make sure to leave a few centimeters of space between the floor and the mat. This means the bamboo comes into less contact with moisture. This in turn gives it a longer lifespan. If attachment is not possible, for example due to a lack of suitable railing, you can also set up bamboo screens.
Can you drill and screw into bamboo?
If the bamboo stalks are allowed to mature for a sufficient period of time, they become woody and develop an extremely strong wall. You can actually drill through such pipes, especially if they have a thicker diameter, and fasten them with screws.
It is best to use so-called plate head screws (e.g. 6 x 80 millimeters) for screw fastening bamboo, as these do not split the pipes when screwed in. Conventional metal drills are suitable for drilling the holes. You can also build with bamboo in this way.
How do you attach a prefabricated bamboo fence?
You can get a bamboo fence not only by installing bamboo mats on an existing fence, but also by using prefabricated bamboo fence elements. These are suitable for any location and are attached like other prefabricated fences. Depending on the given surface, the posts can be mounted as follows:
- Dig in and secure in the ground with ground anchors
- cast in concrete
- screw onto concrete or asph alt with screw-on sleeves
How do you attach bamboo to a wall?
If you want to attach bamboo to a wall, you can use the tubes either
- mount on a previously installed mounting grid
- screw on
- glue with hot glue
The latter variant is particularly recommended if you cannot or are not allowed to screw on the bamboo (e.g. because the landlord forbids it).
Tip
How weatherproof is bamboo?
Sophisticated bamboo is an extremely weather-resistant material with a very long service life. Even in compost, bamboo only rots very slowly, which is why it is generally recommended to dispose of cut stalks, for example, with household waste or the composting plant. However, bamboo should be treated with a wood preservative before further use.
