A teepee made of bamboo stalks can be built quickly and is ideal for letting climbing and climbing plants grow upwards. Whether vegetables such as beans, peas, cucumbers or ornamental plants such as clematis or sweet peas - the bamboo trellis offers support for them all.
How to build a bamboo teepee for plants?
To build a teepee out of bamboo, you need several bamboo poles, a string (e.g. made from sisal) and a tape measure. Mark the desired diameter, insert the poles into the ground in a circle and tie them tightly at the top.
How to build a teepee out of bamboo?
For a bamboo teepee, you only need between four and eight bamboo poles of sufficient length and thickness. How many you need depends on the size of the teepee you want and how many plants you ultimately want to grow up it. You also need a durable, strong cord (€6.00 on Amazon), for example made of sisal.

- Mark the desired diameter of the surface using a tape measure.
- Insert the bamboo canes into the ground at regular intervals along the resulting circle.

What size should the bamboo teepee be?
How big you build the teepee depends entirely on the type of plant you want to grow up it. However, since many vegetable or ornamental plants such as beans, cucumbers, peas, nasturtiums, etc. can grow quite tall, a height of between two and two and a half meters is recommended.
You decide for yourself what diameter the tipi should have. However, please note that for larger areas you will also need more bamboo poles. In addition, the poles should be around 20 to 30 centimeters thick in diameter - so they are stable enough to support the weight of the plants.
Where should you put the bamboo teepee?
Where you place the bamboo teepee depends entirely on the location preferences of the plants growing on it. You just have to make sure that the teepee can be firmly anchored in the ground so that it doesn't get knocked over at the first gust of wind. To do this, you should drive the bamboo poles at least ten centimeters or more into the ground and tread firmly - the higher the tipi is, the deeper the poles have to go into the ground. A relatively windless location also makes sense, for example in front of a house or wall.
Do you have to treat the teepee in any way so that it lasts longer?
In principle, protective treatment of the bamboo poles, for example with a wood preservative, is not necessary. Bamboo is naturally very robust and durable, and you can easily build a new trellis out of bamboo next season - after all, the raw material is just as cheap to procure as it is sustainable.
Do you perhaps have a bamboo grove yourself? You should remove the older stalks after about seven years anyway. These can then be used to build trellises and other projects.
Tip
Pay attention to the shadows
When setting up the tipi in the garden, make sure that it itself casts shadows due to its height and the vegetation and can thus shade other beds. Depending on the vegetation, sun-hungry plants can no longer be cultivated on these.
