Acacias are often confused with robinias in Germany, which is why they are also known as “mock acacias”. Under the climatic conditions here, real acacias can only be found in pots on balconies - in winter they have to be brought indoors. In this country, the question of when an acacia sprouts usually concerns the mock acacia.
When do acacias sprout?
Real acacias are native to the tropicsevergreen plantsThey can be grown as pot plants in other climate regions, but may then lose their leaves in winter. The black locust, also known as the false acacia, is summer green. It loses its leaves in late autumn and does not sprout again until spring.
When does the real acacia sprout?
Due to their origin, acacias are usuallyevergreen plants The real acacia comes from tropical and subtropical climate zones and therefore only grows wild in Australia, Africa and South America. They are only partially hardy, which is why they can only be kept as a pot plant in Germany and the rest of Europe. They usually stay green all year round. However, if they overwinter in the dark, they lose their leaves.
When does the mock acacia begin to sprout?
The black locust or mock acacia loses its leaves in late autumn and only sprouts again inlate spring. Depending on the weather and climate, you can expect budding from April onwards. Pruning is not absolutely necessary; the false acacia will sprout again in the spring without pruning. It needs a lot of sun to form its foliage, which is why it thrives best in a bright, sunny location. Although it prefers to grow in warm regions, it is still significantly more cold-resistant than the real acacia.
Tip
Acacias overwinter successfully
To prevent acacias from losing their foliage in winter, they should be placed in a bright but cool place during the cool months. Winter gardens or bright basement rooms are well suited. Living spaces are usually too warm and therefore unsuitable for overwintering the acacia.
