A cherry tree does not look as spectacular in autumn as it does in spring when it is in full bloom. Nevertheless, its foliage, which slowly turns a rich yellow or reddish brown, is an attractive sight.

What happens to the cherry tree in autumn and what care work is necessary?

In autumn, the leaves of the cherry tree initially turn yellow, then brownish or reddish before falling off. Important fall tasks include pruning and planting, soil preparation, watering, fertilizing and leaf composting.

The smooth, almond-shaped leaves of a cherry tree with jagged edges begin to turn yellow at the end of September/beginning of October, then brownish or reddish. Once the foliage is completely immersed in autumnal colors, the leaves begin to fall off. Depending on the weather, the cherry becomes completely bare within a few days and all the leaves are at its feet. While the cherry tree goes into winter rest, the gardener still has some work to do.

Autumn work on cherry trees

Important work is carried out in autumn, especially pruning and planting work, whereby the sweet cherries should be cut in the summer after the harvest, or in August at the latest.

September

  • carry out the necessary pruning work on harvested sour cherry trees,
  • large cuts pass,
  • Remove root shoots at the attachment point.

October

  • Plant the cherry trees from the middle of the month after appropriate soil preparation,
  • water thoroughly under the trees if the soil is very dry,
  • Lay glue rings around trunks and tree posts to prevent frostbite,
  • collect and destroy monilia diseased fruits.

November

  • Prepare planting plan for next year,
  • Deeply loosen the land intended for spring planting, dig a tree pit and place a tree post,
  • improve the soil after deep loosening,
  • water the planted trees, cover the tree slices with compost,
  • Fertilize cherry trees in the lawn with organic fertilizer, fertilize with potash and phosphate.
  • rake up discarded leaves and compost them.

Tips & Tricks

If the leaves of the cherry tree turn yellow in summer, it can indicate a lack of minerals in the soil. A targeted application of a fertilizer containing iron or magnesium (€9.00 on Amazon) helps.
