How do you properly care for hyacinth bulbs?
Hyacinth bulbs are planted 10-15 cm deep in the garden bed or in pots in spring. Let it steep in a glass without direct contact with water. Store frost-hardy, dark and cool in winter. They need a cold phase of around eight weeks to form flowers. Propagation possible via breeding tubers.
Planting hyacinth bulbs correctly
Hyacinth bulbs thrive in
- Outdoor garden bed
- Pot on the windowsill
- Hyacinth jar
In the garden
The best time to plant hyacinth bulbs is early spring. The tubers then grow well and provide flowers for many years.
Depending on their size, the onions are planted between 10 and 15 centimeters deep, with the flat end facing downwards.
The hardy tubers only need winter protection in the first year. Alternatively, you can dig them up in the fall and overwinter them indoors.
In the pot
The onion is placed in the pot so that the top end sticks out of the soil. After flowering, the plant needs to take a rest period so that the hyacinth bulbs can gather strength for the next season.
They can remain in the pot or be removed and stored in a dry and clean condition in the cellar or garden shed.
In the glass
You grow hyacinth bulbs in a glass by placing the bulb in a glass filled with water. The tuber must not come into direct contact with the water.
Overwintering hyacinth bulbs
Hyacinth bulbs overwinter in the garden without any problems because they are absolutely frost hardy. Indoors, store the dry, clean tubers in a dark, cool place.
Hyacinth bulbs need a cold phase
From the end of November, hyacinth bulbs stored indoors must be stored in a very cold place for around eight weeks. Otherwise they hardly produce any flowers.
Propagate hyacinth bulbs via breeding tubers
The hyacinth bulb forms small bulbs during the growth phase. In the garden, the spring flowers multiply by themselves.
If you want to grow new hyacinths, pull the tubers out of the ground in autumn and separate the bulbs. In spring you can plant them either in a pot or in the garden.
Tips & Tricks
Stored hyacinth bulbs must never dry out completely. If they are very dry, gently mist them with a little water from the spray bottle. But the onion should not get too wet.
