So that the royal flowers bloom as magnificently as desired, it is important to place them in the right location. Only here do the sun-hungry plants enchant the garden with their beautiful shoots.
Which location is ideal for gladioli?
The ideal location for gladioli is a warm, full sun and sheltered place in the flower bed. Avoid waterlogging, water regularly and, in clayey soils, add a drainage layer of sand. Plant at least two-year-old bulbs.
Gladiolus love the sun
The perfect location for the gladiolus is a warm, full sun and sheltered place in the flower bed. Wind protection or tying to plant poles is important as the long, slender flower shoots tend to bend over. Alternatively, you can plant the gladiolus in front of a fence and tie the shoots directly to the property boundary.
Avoid waterlogging
Gladiolus evaporates a lot of water through the large flowers and leaves and therefore need to be watered regularly, and not just on hot days. However, waterlogging should be avoided, as the onions that are permanently exposed to moisture quickly begin to rot.
In locations with clayey or compacted soil, you should therefore add a drainage layer of sand to each planting hole. Loosen the soil deeply so that the water can drain away easily.
Tip
Make sure to plant at least two-year-old bulbs. The small annual seed bulbs and the daughter bulbs of older tubers produce leaves but do not yet bloom.
