Red clover is not always very popular in the garden because the wild weed is difficult to control. You can propagate red clover as an ornamental plant or for harvesting for cooking and medicinal teas by sowing or dividing roots. Tips for red clover propagation.
How does red clover propagation work?
Red clover reproduces through seeds or root suckers. Seeds can be sown from April to September on growing beds or in deep pots without covering with soil. Alternatively, root runners can be plucked out and planted in loose garden soil or prepared pots with a planting distance of 20 centimeters.
How red clover reproduces
Red clover reproduces through the seeds that ripen in the pods of the legume. On the other hand, the long taproot forms many runners from which new plants sprout.
In a favorable location, red clover multiplies all by itself, and so much so that you can hardly get the wild herb out of the garden again.
The seeds are scattered in all directions when the pods open, so you can find new seedlings everywhere in the garden. The roots are so robust that new plants grow from even the smallest residue.
Growing new plants from seeds
To grow red clover yourself in the garden, you can propagate it from seeds, runners or by root division. Red clover propagation is possible from April to September.
To propagate red clover by sowing, scatter the seeds on a growing bed with normal garden soil. Red clover can also be sown in pots. However, the pot must be as deep as possible.
Red clover germinates in light and is not covered with soil. Keep the seeds moist but not too wet.
Propagate red clover through runners
Root division is unnecessary with red clover. The plant produces so many runners that you can simply cut out as many as you need.
Place them in loose garden soil or a pot prepared with garden soil. The planting distance should be 20 centimeters.
Red clover propagation on a large scale
Red clover is grown agriculturally. The plant is used for various purposes:
- Green manure
- Livestock feed
- ornamental plant
- Wild herbs
- Medicinal plant
In order to obtain large quantities of new seeds, red clover is sown and not propagated through root division. The seeds are specially selected for the respective purpose. Red clover seeds for livestock feed or green manure are not suitable for growing sprouts.
Tip
The flowers and leaves of red clover are edible. If you like to eat flower salads and vegetable soups or are looking for a beautiful decoration for vegetable plates, the red or pink flowers of red clover are a good alternative.
