There are a lot of items in the household that you can use to create a fully functional greenhouse for growing your own plants in just a few simple steps. In addition to cardboard egg cartons, empty sales packaging made of transparent plastic is ideal for sowing.
How can you make a greenhouse yourself?
To make a mini greenhouse yourself, egg cartons or empty sales packaging made of transparent plastic can be used. Fill the holes with a suitable potting mix, sow sparingly and cover with a ventilated freezer bag. Place the mini greenhouse on a sunny windowsill.
If the growing boxes that specialist retailers offer are too expensive for you, you can easily make your own mini greenhouse from a whole range of household items that you no longer need. By the way, a particularly good idea if you have children in whom you would like to encourage a littleenthusiasm for growing plants. The ideal time for crafting such small greenhouses is the last few weeks of February or right at the beginning of March. This means that the seedlings still have enough time to develop stably until they are planted outdoors.
What egg wrappers and empty plastic cups are good for
In an egg pallet that you no longer need, you can grow six to ten plants without much effort. To do this, the lid is first removed and the recesses filled with soil that is not too moist. We recommend the following mixture as the composition of the soil if tomatoes or cucumbers are to be grown:
- 40 percent normal garden soil;
- 30 percent mature compost
- 15 percent each peat and sandy soil
Seeds don’t always have to cost something
It will be particularly inexpensive to build a greenhouse if seeds from last summer's harvest are available to grow the young plants. The best breeding success occurs when seeds of the fruit are taken that come from thedealer at the weekly market. Otherwise, there are also numerous exchanges on the Internet for allotment gardeners who offer plant seeds from natural cultivation for little money.
One grain per bowl and no more
Sowing sparingly is particularly important for the growth of the plants. If too many seeds are used, the seedlings will otherwise take away each other's breeding ground. Press each grain a few millimeters deep into the soil and then close the small opening. Damp soil does not need to be wateredInstead of the separated lid, an old freezer bag (previously punched out some ventilation openings with a hole punch!) is placed over the box. Finally, just place your mini house on a sunny window sill.
Tip
When the first delicate green becomes visible, the plastic bag can be omitted for a few hours during the day and until shortly before sunset. Don't water the young plants directly either, just keep the soil moist with a used spray bottle.
