A swing frame does not necessarily have to be set in concrete, but it is the safest method of attachment. Because only a few frames are so heavy that they do not wobble due to their own weight alone, even under heavy use.

How do I set a swing frame in concrete?

A swing frame does not necessarily have to be set in concrete, but it is the safest fastening method. When setting in concrete, you should dig holes at least 50 cm deep and 15 cm larger than the post diameter, pour in concrete and press the frame at least 10 cm deep into the damp concrete.

Metal swing frames in particular are usually very light. This is where setting in concrete is particularly useful. A wooden swing, for example made of robinia, is significantly heavier, but here too you should be on the safe side and at least anchor the frame.

What do I have to consider when setting in concrete?

There are no special regulations for setting up a swing in your own garden. However, in the spirit of good neighborliness, you should not necessarily place play equipment directly next to the garden fence. Nobody wants to be watched by neighborhood children swinging in their own garden. When purchasing the devices, also look for a test seal from TÜV (€169.00 on Amazon).

If you live in a rented apartment, ask your landlord whether he agrees to having a swing set in concrete. This may already be considered a structural measure. A swing set in concrete is also no longer so easy to move.

Concreting step by step

First find a suitable place for the swing. It should be as flat as possible and really big enough to swing. Ideally, the surface is soft enough so that your children cannot injure themselves if they fall. To test, place the assembled swing frame in the desired location. Mark the bases of the posts with fine sand or flour.

In order to dig the required holes, you must put the frame aside again. The holes should be at least 50 cm deep and approximately 15 cm larger than the diameter of the posts. A little gravel in the hole ensures better drainage of rainwater. Then add the concrete mixed according to instructions and place the swing frame in the damp concrete.

The frame should be at least 10 cm deep in the concrete, better even 20 cm. If necessary, pour a small amount of concrete into the holes and let it dry before placing the swing frame in and filling it with the remaining concrete. But make sure that the swing is level at the end. The swing may only be used when the concrete is completely dry.

The most important things in brief:

  • Ask the landlord for rental property
  • only buy a tested swing frame
  • Set up the swing on as level a floor as possible
  • be sure to set up according to instructions
  • Provide fall protection on hard surfaces
  • Suitable fall protection: bark mulch, sand, lawn or fall protection mats
  • Inspect the swing frame and ropes in spring for winter and play damage

Tip

A swing set in concrete can usually withstand intense swinging. Nevertheless, you should check the frame including screws and ropes regularly.
