Once the buckthorn has a suitable location, it is very easy to care for. Here you can find out which conditions the large shrub particularly values.
Where should the buckthorn be planted?
The ideal location for a buckthorn tree is in partially shaded, moisture-loving environments such as sparse forests, embankments and floodplains. It prefers fresh to wet soils with an acidic pH and thrives on loam, sand or clay.
Basic site requirements
Light forests, embankments, floodplains and birch bogs are the buckthorn's natural habitats. The shrub is moisture-loving. That's why it feels very comfortable near the banks of a pond or stream. He is happy about fresh to wet soil, but it doesn't have to be necessary. A slightly drier location is also fine. The buckthorn tree does best in partial shade, but it also adapts well to full sun.
Practical: The large shrub does not place high demands on the exact type of soil. It thrives on loam, sand or clay - provided the pH value is acidic.
The growth factor
The buckthorn tree can grow two to three meters high - in extremely good conditions up to seven or eight meters. Keep this in mind when planting the shrub. However, you can keep the buckthorn at your desired height through regular pruning.
