As is often the case with annoying, unwanted animal settlements in the house and garden, the best way to keep wasps under control is to use bait. Read below what has a magnetic effect on them to keep them away from the dinner table on the terrace.
How can you specifically attract wasps?
Wasps can be effectively attracted and kept away from unwanted areas by offering sugary bait such as sugar water, fruit lemonade or overripe fruit, as well as savory bait such as raw meat or fish.
Distract wasps in a targeted manner
Who doesn't know this: As soon as you sit down at the coffee table on the terrace with delicious Danish pastries on a beautiful July day, loudly buzzing, yellow and black striped prickly creatures fight over your delicacies. Not only do they do this completely self-confidently and offensively - if you're not careful, they might even end up in your mouth, which can have very dangerous consequences.
What initially appears to be an annoying fact can also be exploited. Because you can rely on the wasps' obvious greed for sugary things to keep them away from your coffee table - at least a little.
Why wasps fly so much to sweets - and savory food
Excessive wasp infestations occur, especially in late summer, when the wasp colonies are at an advanced stage of breeding. During this time there are already many workers in the wasp colony who have to look after around 7,000 to 9,000 larvae and themselves. So they are constantly looking for protein for their offspring and for sweets for their own energy needs.
To remember:
- Wasp colony grows strongest in late summer
- The many workers then have to collect a lot of protein for the larvae and sweets for themselves
Take advantage of wasps’ preferences
You can therefore easily take advantage of the wasps' needs. A bowl of sweets set out specifically for them in a place where they won't disturb you can give you more peace of mind. A bowl of pure sugar water or fruit lemonade is ideal - it offers the wasps an easily accessible and extremely tasty food source. What the stinging insects also like to pounce on is overripe fruit. With a bowl of mushy grapes or plums you can concentrate many wasps at once - ideally at the very edge of the garden.
But savory foods also attract wasps efficiently. Raw meat or raw fish in particular have had a strong effect in research experiments.
