How can I build a stone planter myself?

To make your own stone planter, mix equal proportions of cement, peat and perlite, pour the mixture into a suitable mold and press a smaller mold into it. Allow to dry, remove the pots, drill a hole and decorate with pebbles or mosaic stones.

Construction instructions

Required materials

  • Cement
  • Peat
  • Perlite
  • a wheelbarrow or a construction tarpaulin
  • Protective gloves (preferably with cuffs)
  • a shape with the desired size of the future plant pot
  • another shape with a smaller diameter
  • colorful mosaic stones or pebbles as desired

Info: To protect your garden, you should lay out a large tarpaulin. Alternatively, you can mix the cement in an old wheelbarrow. Perlite not only makes the peat concrete weatherproof but also light and transportable thanks to its airy structure. But be careful, the cement mixture is highly corrosive, which is why intact safety gloves are absolutely necessary.

Work steps

  1. Be sure to wear protective gloves (€13.00 on Amazon) when working with concrete.
  2. Mix the cement, peat and perlite in equal proportions.
  3. Choose the desired shape of your future pot.
  4. Place the container on a plant roller to make it easier to move later.
  5. Pour the mixture into the container.
  6. Save a part for later design and make sure that it does not dry out.
  7. Now push the smaller container into the large container.
  8. Leave the two pots standing for one night.
  9. Make sure the location is dry.
  10. The next day, remove the dried concrete from the containers.
  11. Drill a hole in the ground.

Note: The hole is used to prevent waterlogging caused by irrigation water.

Now you have a classic concrete flower pot. But how does this stone get its appearance? Now the cement mixture that you set aside comes into play. If it is already too dry, you may need to mix new cement.

  1. Coat the concrete bucket with the cement.
  2. Glue the pebbles or mosaic stones onto the bucket in creative patterns, arranged or randomly mixed.
  3. Let the cement dry.
  4. Now your stone planter is ready for planting.

Note: Cover the hole in the ground with a piece of pottery before filling the bucket with soil. Read here how to properly fill a plant pot.
