The decorative Chinese reed (bot. Miscanthus sinensis) is available in different sizes and color variations. One of these will definitely fit into your garden. The hardy ornamental grass is not difficult to plant and just as easy to care for.
How do you plant miscanthus correctly?
To plant miscanthus successfully, choose a sunny location and fresh to moist soil. Plant it in spring, water it well and water it regularly for the first few weeks, without additional fertilizer.
The ideal location
Most varieties like light and warmth, the more the better. So give your miscanthus a location that is as sunny as possible, alternatively place it in light shade. Full shade is generally not suitable for miscanthus. At least you shouldn't expect a flower here.
Prepare the soil well
If you have humus-rich, fresh to moist soil in your garden, then it does not need any special preparation for planting easy-care miscanthus. Dig a planting hole about twice the size of the reed's root ball and add some mature compost into it.
Then plant the miscanthus about as deep as it was previously in the container, perhaps a little deeper. Water the reeds well; they will also appreciate regular watering in the next few days. Fertilization is not necessary in fresh soil.
The ideal planting time
In principle, you can plant miscanthus throughout the entire vegetation phase until autumn. However, planting in spring makes the most sense. This means you can enjoy your elephant grass in the summer and it can take root well until winter.
Spring planting is particularly beneficial in a harsh area so that the miscanthus survives the first winter well. Young reeds are only partially hardy. If you would like to plant your miscanthus in a pot, then the season only plays a minor role and you can take your time.
The most important things in brief:
- ideal planting time: spring (March or April)
- ideal location: sunny
- ideal soil: fresh to moist
- water well after planting
- water regularly for a few weeks, but do not fertilize
