What enemies do martens have and how can they help to drive away martens?

The natural enemies of martens are foxes, bears, wolves and birds of prey such as eagles. To get rid of martens, you can put fox urine, cat urine, dog urine or even your own urine on the affected areas to deter them.

The enemies of martens

Like most animals, martens are hunted by larger or stronger predators. Martens grow to a size of 40 to 60cm (without tail), which significantly limits the number of enemies. In the wild, martens are hunted and eaten by the following animals:

  • Foxes
  • Bears
  • Wolves
  • Birds of prey like eagles

Special case of cats

There are ugly pictures of dead cats on the internet that have fallen victim to martens. The law of bigger and stronger applies here: If the cat is significantly larger than the marten, it probably won't mess with it; However, if the cat is still small, it is easy prey for the marten. There are also other factors:

  • If the marten has kittens, it will defend them at all costs - even against larger cats.
  • When it is mating season, i.e. summer, male martens are more aggressive and can sometimes attack a larger cat.
  • If the marten has already settled down at home, it will be more inclined to defend its territory against intruders.

Tip

A cat in the house will definitely discourage new martens from settling here.

Repel martens from enemies with urine

Martens are afraid of foxes. This is good news because you can buy fox urine online (€12.00 on Amazon) and use it against martens. The urine is distributed on windows and in corners in bowls or on cotton balls or similar carriers and the marten takes off. This method works best as a preventive measure.

Alternatively, you can also use cat urine (e.g. in cat litter) or dog urine or even your own urine.
