Preserved tangerines refine cakes, taste great with rice pudding and are a popular dessert, not just with children. However, canned fruits are often very high in sugar. In addition, a lot of waste is created, which can be saved by cooking fruit yourself.
How can you preserve tangerines?
To preserve tangerines, you need 10 seedless tangerines, 450 ml of water, 150-250 g of sugar and preserving jars. Peel the tangerines and remove the white skin, distribute the fruit in sterilized jars and pour hot sugar-water mixture over them. The preservation takes place at 90°C in the cooking pot or 100°C in the oven for 30 minutes.
Ingredients for 4 glasses of 250 ml each
To preserve tangerines, you only need a few basic ingredients.
- 10 tangerines or clementines, preferably seedless
- 450 ml water
- 150 – 250 g sugar
Depending on your personal preference, you can optionally flavor the fruits with cardamom or vanilla. It tastes very tasty if you replace 150 ml of the water with rum.
Users needed
First you need suitable glasses. These can be:
- Twist-off jars with undamaged seal,
- Classic mason jars that are closed with a lid, rubber ring and clip,
- Jars in which the lid, which has a rubber ring, is firmly connected by a clamp.
You can preserve the tangerines in a pot or in the oven.
Preparation
- Pour water, if necessary with the rum, into a pot and bring to the boil.
- Stir again and again until the sugar has dissolved.
- Optional: Cut open the vanilla pod, crush the cardamom pods and cook briefly.
- Peel and divide the mandarins. Remove the white membrane very carefully.
- Distribute the fruits among the previously sterilized jars. There should be a two centimeter wide edge at the top.
- Pour the hot liquid over it so that the tangerines are completely covered.
Preserving in the preserving pot
- Place the glasses next to each other on a rack in the pot. They are not allowed to touch each other.
- Pour enough water so that the glasses are two-thirds full.
- Soak at 90 degrees for 30 minutes.
Preserving in the oven
- Place glasses in a drip pan and pour two to three centimeters of water.
- Place in the oven on the lowest rack.
- Set the temperature to 100 degrees and leave the food in the hot oven for 30 minutes.
Tip
After canning, allow the jars to cool completely and check to see if a vacuum has formed. If you store the cooked tangerines in a dark, cool place, they will last for several months.
