Which moss is suitable as a lawn replacement?
Star moss is an ideal lawn replacement because it is evergreen, hardy and easy to care for. It prefers partially shaded locations, slightly nutritious, moist soils and forms low, dense cushions without mowing.
The Mastwort Star Moss
Star moss is not strictly speaking a moss, but a fattening herb from the carnation family. The very low ground cover forms dense cushions that are covered with countless small white starry flowers from June to August.
The cushion perennial does not grow higher than five centimeters and is therefore ideal as a lawn replacement. It is evergreen and can tolerate temperatures down to minus 35 degrees.
The delicate star moss can hardly assert itself against competitors. So that the area is not overgrown by other plants, it is worth edging it with lawn edging stones.

Star moss also grows in direct sunlight, but there is a risk that the delicate plant will dry out too quickly. In order for the ground cover to develop its full bloom, the soil must always be slightly moist.

Star moss is hardy. The area should be cleared of leaves before winter. Too much moisture forms under the leaf cover, which causes the cushion perennial to rot.
