The lawn is too thick! This statement will make lawn lovers think, but for most people the opposite is the case. However, it can happen that the lawn is actually too dense. What you can do about it.
What to do if the lawn is too thick?
To prevent a lawn that is too dense, you should loosen the soil well before sowing, spread the seeds thinly and ensure drainage. Maintain the lawn regularly by mowing frequently, watering appropriately, fertilizing, scarifying and aerating in spring and autumn.
Problems with grass that is too thick
First of all, the gardener is happy when the lawn becomes nice and thick. But the joy doesn't last long when the grass plants start to dry out and die after a while.
A lawn that is too dense prevents enough air from reaching the roots. The rain or irrigation water does not seep away and accumulates on the surface.
Some gardeners are also bothered by the very hard surface that a lawn that is too dense creates. This is very uncomfortable when walking barefoot.
Ensure a good surface and proper care
- loosen the soil well
- Provide drainage if necessary
- Sprinkle seeds thinly
- Mow frequently
- Blow up at the right time
- Fertilize
- Scarify the lawn regularly
- Aerate the lawn from time to time
Prepare the substrate and sow correctly
The subsoil should be very well loosened before sowing and free of thickened soil, stones and weeds. If the soil is too dense, refine it with sand and gravel and, if necessary, create additional drainage.
Sprinkle the seeds thinly. You can later reseed areas that are too light by hand. If you accidentally sow too much lawn seed in one area, spread it with a rake.
For large areas, use a spreader that distributes the seeds evenly.
Take care of your lawn properly
With the right lawn care, you can ensure that the lawn is nice and thick, but not too dense. Mow often without cutting off too much. The glass straws should remain at least two centimeters long.
Don't blast so often, but blast hard. A lawn must be watered once a week, at most every four days.
Scarify the lawn in spring and autumn. If the soil is very dense, it also helps to occasionally aerate the area with an aerator.
Tips & Tricks
A sign of lawns that are too dense is the growth of broadleaf plantain. This wild weed is so robust that it can colonize even very compacted areas.
