The non-toxic lungwort is native to this country and is one of the first perennials to present its flowers throughout the year. But does it like to grow in the sun or is it better to plant it in partial shade to shade?
Which location is ideal for lungwort?
Lungwort prefers a semi-shady to shady location, ideally under deciduous trees or near bushes. Pay attention to nutrient-rich, permeable, humus-rich and moist soil, which may contain lime.
The leaves wilt in the sun
If the lungwort was planted directly in the blazing sun, it will suffer. Its leaves quickly wither. Therefore, you should generally place it in a semi-shady to shady location.
A place under a tree or bush – perfect
Places under deciduous trees or near bushes are ideal. These are still bare in March and the lungwort receives a little more light for flowering. In summer it stands in the protective shade under the leafy trees and bushes.
If you decide to plant the lungwort in a pot and put it on the balcony, south-facing balconies are completely unsuitable. Balconies that face east or northwest are well suited.

When choosing a substrate, you can also take a look at the natural distribution area of lungwort to get an idea of where it prefers to grow. It occurs mainly in bush areas, in deciduous forests and at the edge of water.
The substrate – nutrient-rich and moist
For a pot culture, normal potting soil (€10.00 on Amazon) or potting soil is sufficient. When grown outdoors, the soil should have the following properties when planting:
- permeable
- humos
- nutrient-rich
- moist
- likes limestone
Tip
Lungwort flowers last longest in a shady location or the flowering period is prolonged.
