With its bright, sunny yellow flower color, the dandelion likes to cover entire areas of the country. Who doesn't know these flowers, which are sometimes also called buttercups or cowflowers? But when do they appear?
When are dandelions blooming?
The flowering period of the dandelion extends mainly from April to June, although isolated flowers can also appear into autumn. Rebloom often occurs in late summer. Harvest time for dandelion flowers is ideally before and during the flowering period.
Flowering period: April to June and thereafter
The main flowering of dandelions begins around the beginning of April. The individual flowers are present for several days - closing at night, rain and drought - before fading. The flowering period lasts until the end of June/beginning of July. Often there is a re-bloom in late summer.
Sporadic flowers can then appear until autumn. The perfect harvest time for dandelions (flowers e.g. for salads, syrup) has come both before and during the flowering period.
This is what the flowers look like
Here are the characteristics of dandelion flowers that will help you recognize them:
- one flower per plant
- 3 to 5 cm wide
- Flower baskets above the stems
- plate-shaped inflorescence
- 200 to 300 ray flowers per flower basket
- Ranged flowers are on the flower base
- composed of 5 petals, a style and 5 anthers
- green bracts
Attention: The seeds will then spread
Dandelions are less of a danger when they are blooming. But after the flowering period it's time to be careful! As soon as you touch the seed heads lightly, the seeds fly away and ensure reproduction. If you have a garden and want to remove the dandelions, you should do it before or during flowering!
Tip
The early flowering period and the high nectar and pollen content make the dandelion flowers particularly valuable for the bee world and therefore for beekeepers.
