You can also find various types of bamboo with more or less red colored stalks in stores under the name “Red Bamboo”. The more sun these plants get, the more intense and bright the initially green stalks become.

How do I plant red bamboo correctly?

Red bamboo prefers a sunny to partially shaded location with humus-rich soil. Depending on the variety, choose the right amount of sunlight, water the root ball well and water the plant regularly. A rhizome barrier is not necessary.

The ideal location for red bamboo

The Himalayan calamus falconeri Damarapa is a relatively delicate bamboo. It prefers partial shade and does not tolerate full sun well. This bamboo grows to around two to five meters tall and can only tolerate frost down to around -5 °C. Its initially bluish stalks later turn green to yellowish and develop reddish stripes.

The Fargesi jiuzhaigou No.1 or Chinese Wonder sets accents in your garden with its bright red stalks. It is also suitable as a container plant. In the open field it grows to a height of around two and a half to three meters. In autumn it loses some of its leaves. It can tolerate frost down to around -25 °C.

Give this bamboo as sunny a place as possible so that the stalks become more intensely colored. But it also copes well with partial shade. This bamboo does not need a rhizome barrier, as no bamboo of the Fargesia species does.

Planting the red bamboo in the pot

If you want to plant the red bamboo in a pot, then get a plant pot with at least 60 liter capacity. Drill a few small drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket if none already exist. Line the planter with pottery shards and add a layer of gravel on top, this is the drainage layer for water drainage.

Fill the planter about two-thirds full with humus soil. Water your bamboo's root ball thoroughly before placing it in the pot. Now fill the bucket with soil and water it well again. You should repot your bamboo approximately every two to four years.

The most important things in brief:

  • Choose location according to variety, sunny to partially shaded
  • humous soil
  • Watering root balls
  • Water the bamboo well
  • no rhizome barrier necessary

Tip

The very sensitive Himalayan calamus falconeri Damarapa is not suitable for beginners. They should rather choose the easy-care Fargesias.
