Whether in a pot on the balcony or in a bed outdoors – chive garlic is considered easy to care for. But this is only on the condition that nothing goes wrong during cultivation and that the location requirements are taken into account
When and how do you plant chives?
Cut garlic should be grown indoors from March or sown directly outdoors from the end of April to September. The plant prefers a sunny location and loose, nutrient-rich substrate. Plant 25cm apart and in rows 40cm apart.
When is the best planting time or time for sowing?
If you want to plant early chives, you can start this process from mid to late May. It is important that night frosts are no longer expected outside. The young plants cannot tolerate these. If you want to sow chives with your own hands, you can sow them at home from March or sow them directly outdoors from the end of April to September at the latest.
How do you sow chives?
The seeds of chive garlic germinate in cold and dark conditions. After experiencing a cold spell, sow them 1 to 2 cm deep into the soil. Over the next few weeks the soil with the seeds will be kept moist. The seeds germinate after 14 to 28 days. The ideal germination temperature is 20 °C.
After the seedlings are visible and small plants have developed from them, they can be pricked out. When planting in pots or beds, a distance of 25 cm should be maintained between individual plants. It is important to ensure a distance of 40 cm between rows.
What location requirements does chive garlic have?
Cut garlic needs a sunny to full sun location. The partial shade represents its tolerance limit. If it is cultivated on the balcony or on the windowsill, importance should be attached to a southern exposure. The plant substrate should ideally meet the following properties:
- loose texture
- good permeability
- fresh to moderately moist environment
- high nutrient and humus content
When can the herb be harvested?
Once planted, chive garlic can be harvested for several years. It is hardy and if it was planted the previous year, the harvest can begin in March. Its edible leaves and flowers can be harvested until late summer and used in salads and soups.
Tip
Do not plant chives next to cabbage, beans and peas. He can't make friends with these plant neighbors. On the other hand, he likes the proximity to cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes and strawberries and rewards this neighborhood with a lower need for care.
