Frost or not frost? The temperatures at which you can leave your yucca palm outside (or not) depend on the specific species. In the large family of yuccas or palm lilies, some species are winter and frost hardy, others prefer high temperatures.
What temperatures can a yucca palm tolerate?
The tolerance of frost in Yucca palms depends on the species. Indoor yucca (Yucca elephantipes) prefers high temperatures and cannot tolerate frost, while garden palm lilies such as Yucca gloriosa and Yucca filamentosa are frost hardy down to minus 20 degrees Celsius.
Indoor yucca needs high temperatures
The Yucca elephantipes or giant palm lily, which is often cultivated as a houseplant, for example, prefers high temperatures and absolutely cannot tolerate frost. You can cultivate this plant on the balcony or terrace over the summer months, but you should bring it into the house in autumn before the first frosts. Other palm lilies - such as Yucca gloriosa or Yucca filamentosa - feel more comfortable when planted in the garden. These palm lilies are frost hardy down to minus 20 or even more degrees Celsius and can therefore be left outside over the winter.
Tip
The houseplant Yucca elephantipes also enjoys a vegetation break in winter in a bright room and at a maximum of 10 °C - of course in the plus range.
