A stable and load-bearing foundation frame has the task of holding all the wall elements and then connecting the greenhouse to the foundation. When building things yourself, age-resistant and easy-to-assemble U-profiles made of aluminum are usually used, which are screwed together.

How to connect a greenhouse to the foundation?

To connect a greenhouse to the foundation, a sturdy foundation frame made of aluminum, wood or steel is used. This frame is bolted, welded or cast into the substructure, providing a watertight connection that ensures maximum thermal insulation.

A stable base is one of the most important requirements for the stability of any building. We have already described in a detailed article on our portal what tasks a foundation has in greenhouse construction and which types of construction are differentiated. Once the supporting substructure is completed, you now have to connect the greenhouse to the foundation. In addition to thesupporting function, another task of this construction is to create the mostair-tight and watertight connection between the substructure and the wall or covering materials, which will later ensure maximum thermal insulation.

For lightweight constructions, for example with foil covering, a cast concrete foundation can often be dispensed with. Here it is enough if the base area on the ground is properly compacted and prepared completely flat. A foundation frame is placed over this, in which 20 to 40 cm long earth spursare placed in each corner, which are now driven into the ground. A particularly stable and long-lasting connection is achieved with an aluminum frame that is virtually rot-proof and can be assembled without outside help. Alternatively, such frames can be screwed onto a prefabricated wooden foundation or, in the case of a ring foundation, they can be poured into the liquid concrete.

Build your own foundation frame

In addition to aluminum, a wide variety of materials can be used, from wood to plastic to hot-dip galvanized steel. The individual parts are screwed or welded together depending on your personal taste. It must be noted that they ultimately form a horizontal plane as an overall frame. If you use a metal or plastic frame to connect the greenhouse to the foundation and pour it into the ground together with the concrete, be sure to take the curing time of the base into account. There should be at least two days between assembling the greenhouse walls or windows.

Connecting prefabricated greenhouses to a foundation

The foundation frame mentioned above usually consists of several individual parts, which are no less robust and load-bearing, but must first be assembled. When assemblingbe sure to follow the enclosed assembly instructions for the frame, otherwise any warranty claims due to defects in the overall construction that arise later are at risk.

Tip

The connection between the greenhouse and the foundation is very exposed to moisture near the ground, which can cause premature material wear, particularly in the case of wood. Therefore, before assembly, treat these components with a suitable wood preservative (€25.00 on Amazon) to prevent possible rot formation.
