Every year the inexhaustibly colorful world of dahlias inspires people. These popular summer flowers cause a stir, and not just when they stand alone. Create a fairy tale from dahlias in combination with other plants!
Which plants go well with dahlias?
To combine dahlias attractively, companion plants should have similar heights, location requirements and flowering times. Ideal planting partners are delphiniums, verbena, autumn anemones, coneflowers, phlox, daylilies, sunflowers and ornamental grasses such as quaking grass, switchgrass and pennisetum.
What factors should you consider when combining dahlias?
In order to accentuate dahlias in an attractive way, the following factors should definitely be taken into account when choosing companion plants:
- Flower color: yellow, white, orange, pink, red or violet
- Flowering time: End of June to October
- Location requirements: sunny, humus- and nutrient-rich soil
- Growth height: up to 200 cm
You should take their considerable height into account when looking for suitable plant partners. Dahlias are best combined with plants of similar height.
Many plants that like to be pampered by the sun and prefer a nutrient-rich substrate are suitable for dahlias. Therefore, do not opt for shade-loving companion plants.
Due to their flower color, many dahlias are so intense and colorful that they should be combined with simpler partners. Otherwise there is a risk that the overall picture will appear too exaggerated and the attractiveness of the dahlias will be diminished.

Combine dahlias with pennisetum
Pennisetum grass also goes perfectly with dahlias. They form a fantastic duo: The feathery spikes of the Pennisetum grass are the ideal counterpart to the often thick dahlia flowers. In addition, the green of the grass blades underlines the color of the dahlias. The two also agree on the location.
Combine dahlias as a bouquet in the vase
A bouquet of dahlias looks great, especially if it is also filled with long grasses such as quaking grass or diamond grass.
