The privet is one of the most popular hedge plants. This is thanks not only to its tolerance to pruning, but also to its wintergreen leaves as well as its decorative flowers and shiny black fruits. Which plants can you combine it beautifully with?
Which plants can you combine privet with?
Suitable companion plants for privet are those that have similar location requirements and offer decorative contrasts in the garden or in the pot. Cherry laurel, yew, golden privet, thuja, blood barberry, hornbeam, broom and firethorn work well in hedges. In the pot, roses, cranesbill, lavender and lady's mantle are suitable as underplanting.
What factors should you consider when combining privet?
When looking for suitable companion plants for privet, keep the following factors in mind:
- Foliage: wintergreen
- Fruit decorations: black berries
- Location requirements: sunny to partially shaded, permeable and calcareous soil
- Growth height: 3 to 4 m
The foliage of the privet is present all year round and is colored green. Summer green plants can often benefit visually from the presence of a privet. Take this into account when making combinations.
The black berries are very decorative from autumn to winter. Together with companion plants that also have eye-catching fruit decorations, decorative contrasts can be created.
The location requirements of the privet are also important. The planting partners should also feel comfortable on a calcareous and permeable soil in a sunny to partially shaded location.
Combine privet in the hedge
A privet hedge quickly appears monotonous if it consists only of privet. Therefore, combine the privet in the hedge with other plants that have similar location requirements. Woods that are easy to cut and have a different foliage color, such as the golden privet or the blood barberry, go wonderfully with the privet.
Combinations with the following plants, among others, have proven successful:
- Cherry Laurel
- Yew
- Golden Privet
- Thuja
- Bloodbarberry
- hornbeam
- Gorse
- Firethorn
Combine privet with cherry laurel
The privet and the cherry laurel could almost be soulmates. Their leaf shape, flowers and fruits are similar. Nevertheless, an attractive contrast emerges between the two, but it is not too intrusive. The cherry laurel is shiny and has significantly larger leaves, flowers and fruits than the privet.
Combine privet with firethorn
The interaction of firethorn and privet is wonderful because the two highlight each other. They do this especially in autumn with their fruit covering. The orange fruits of the firethorn almost glow in combination with the black berries of the privet. They also go together because the firethorn is available to the privet as a decorative neighbor all year round thanks to its evergreen leaves.
Combine privet with blood barberry
The blood barberry is strikingly red in color and therefore forms a complementary contrast to privet. In addition, it suits the privet as it has similar location requirements and tolerates pruning well.
Combine privet in the bucket
The privet looks good even in a pot. Especially when it is grown as a stem and planted underneath with flowering ground cover or herbs, it is absolutely gorgeous. Roses should be planted separately in the neighborhood. They go perfectly with the rather dark appearance of the privet. In front of or next to it they seem to really shine with their colorful flowers.
